Requirements:-
Apparatus Required: Mortar & pestle, weigh balance, measuring cylinder, glass rod, spatula, beaker, funnel, etc.
Chemical Required: Magnesium sulfate, sodium hydroxide, light magnesium oxide, and purified water.
Principle:-
It is an aqueous colloidal dispersion of magnesium hydroxide. It is prepared by the precipitation method and hydration method or both.
It is not excessively thick or thin but maintains the design viscosity, It has two effects in a low dose (1-4 ml) it acts as an antacid, and in higher doses (8-10 ml) it acts as a laxative.
Reaction:-
MgO +H2O ——> Mg (OH)2 + Mg SO4 + 2NaOH ——> Mg (OH)2 + Na2SO4

Calculations:-
Procedure:-
- Dissolve the sodium hydroxide in a sufficient amount of purified water contained in the beaker.
- Rub the magnesium oxide in a mixing bowl with the hydroxide solution to a smooth cream.
- Dissolve magnesium sulfate in a sufficient amount of water in a separate beaker.
- Add cream to the magnesium sulfate solution while stirring constantly. This mixture is allowed to stand for 48 hours.
- After 48 hours, drain the liquid above the deposit.
- Add hot purified water to the magnesium hydroxide precipitate to wash the sulfate ions from the precipitate.
- Transfer the washed precipitate to a suitable container and label it.
