Requirements:-

Apparatus Required: Mortar & pestle, weigh balance, measuring cylinder, glass rod, spatula, beaker, stirrer, etc.

Chemical Required: Sucrose and purified water.

Simple Syrup Theory:-

Simple syrup (IP) is a concentrated or nearly saturated solution of sucrose in purified water. According to IP, the concentration of sucrose is 66.7% w/w. The solubility of sugar in water is slow; at such a high concentration.

Therefore the solution is heated to increase the rate of dissolution. If necessary, Methylparaben at a concentration not higher than 0.15% may be used as a preservative.

Syrups are classified into 2 classes.

1. Simple flavor syrups:
Do not contain any medicament or drug. These syrups are used as a vehicle for other Liquid preparations to mask the disagreeable taste of the drug.
2. Medicated syrups:
These contain some medicinal substances along with their other additives. Sucrose concentration in simple syrup is 66.7 %w/w.

Simple syrup i.p. formulation are described below;

1. Weigh the required quantity of sucrose and add the required quantity of water.

2. Then heat the mixture with occasional stirring.

3. Take a precaution of not overheating the solution as it leads to the crystallization of sugar.

4. Add a sufficient amount of purified water to get the final volume of the syrup.

5. Filter if necessary, and then syrup is transferred into an amber-colored container and labeled.
