Apparatus Required: Mortar & pestle, weigh balance, measuring cylinder, glass rod, spatula, beaker, funnel, etc.
Chemical Required: Cod liver oil, Egg yolk, Purified water q.s.
Principle:-
Cod liver oil is a solid oil obtained from fresh cod liver. Cod liver oil contains vitamins A and D, vital nutrients for the function of the immune system, cell growth, reproduction, etc. Cod liver oil emulsion is given in case of vitamin A and D deficiency as an anti-ricket.
The emulsion is prepared using the dry gum method. Acacia is an emulsifier and tragacanth is an emulsion stabilizer. Sodium saccharin is used as a sweetener. Benzaldehyde alcohol is used as a flavoring agent and chloroform as a preservative.
An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids that are immiscible due to liquid-liquid phase separation. Depending on the nature of the dispersed phase, emulsions are divided into (i) water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions and (ii) oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions.

Calculations:-
Procedure:-
1. The egg yolk is separated from the broken egg and placed in a measuring cup. An equal volume of water is added and thoroughly mixed.
2. The calculated volume of the yolk mentioned above is placed in the mortar.
3. The calculated volume of cod liver oil is added to the mortar and mixed with constant stirring.
4. Purified water (1/3 of the total amount is gradually added with constant trituration.
5. Strain the mixture through a muslin cloth.
6. The mortar and pestle are rinsed with a small amount of water and transferred over a muslin cloth.
7. The volume is adjusted to the required level with water in the measuring cylinder.
8. The contents are mixed well and transferred to a narrow neck container
9. The container is closed, polished, labeled, and dosed.
