• Size Reduction is the process of reducing drugs into smaller pieces, coarse particles, or fine powder. This process is also called comminution.

• There are several factors affecting the size reduction. These are hardness, toughness, stickiness, materials structure, etc.

• The process of size reduction is followed by the size separation of the powdered materials.

• During the process of size reduction, uniform particle size is becoming impossible. So a special technique is used to separate particles of specified size which is known as the ‘process of size separation’.

• Mixing and Homogenisation is the most widely used operation in which two or more two substances are homogeneously mixed.

✓ Extraction

• Extraction process can be defined as the treatment of the plant or animal tissues with solvent, whereby the medicinally active constituent is dissolved and the maximum inert matter remains undissolved.

• The solvent used for the extraction is known as ‘Menstruum’ and the inert insoluble materials that remain after the extraction process is called ‘Marc’.

• Tablets can be defined as it is a solid unit dosage form of medicaments with or without suitable diluents and prepared either by molding or compression.
